
The Center for International Business Hosts Virtual Conference to Advance Personal Finance Education Across Jesuit Institutions
The Center for International Business at Loyola University New Orleans proudly co-hosted the virtual conference “Advancing Personal Finance Education” in partnership with Stanford University’s Institute for Economic Policy Research.
This groundbreaking event on November 15th, 2024 brought together faculty, administrators, and experts from 16 Jesuit universities and affiliated institutions to explore innovative strategies for incorporating personal finance education into their curricula.

The conference featured a keynote presentation by Dr. Annamaria Lusardi, a globally recognized expert in financial literacy who previously led personal finance education efforts at Georgetown University for over 20 years before joining Stanford University. Dr. Lusardi’s extensive experience and insights have made her a leader in advancing financial literacy across academic institutions.
Diego Mendez-Carbajo of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis also led a workshop demonstrating how FRED data can be utilized in classrooms to teach personal finance concepts effectively. Loyola University New Orleans’ President, Dr. Xavier Cole, opened the conference with a heartfelt reflection on how financial literacy has shaped his life and underscored its importance for today’s students.
Additionally, the Center for Ethics and Economic Justice shared their impactful work in collaboration with the Jesuit Social Research Institute (JSRI), detailing their three-year initiative teaching personal finance to a re-entry class of 80 students at Rayburn Correctional Center.
Loyola University New Orleans’ administration was well-represented at the event, with participation from President Dr. Xavier Cole, Dean of the College of Business Dr. Robert "Bobby" Savoie MBA '81, Interim Provost Dr. Maria Calzada, Vice Provost Uriel Quesada, Honors Program Director Sean Cain alongside faculty and staff from the Center for International Business and Center for Ethics and Economic Justice.
This collaborative effort marks a significant step forward in fostering financial literacy and empowering students across Jesuit institutions.
