The Center for International Business co-hosts Creative Sparks Conference at University of Costa Rica

The Creative Sparks Emerging Markets: The Case of Costa Rica Conference, held on April 18th, 2024, at the University of Costa Rica, was a significant event focusing on various aspects of emerging markets, particularly Costa Rica.

Morning Sessions:

Welcome Remarks:
   - Dr. Maria Laura Arias Echandi, Vice Provost of Research at Universidad de Costa Rica, initiated the conference with welcome remarks.

Session 1 Presentations:
   - Dr. Gustavo Barboza from Loyola University of New Orleans discussed the "Knowledge Spillover Effects of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) on Foreign and Local Multinational Enterprises in Emerging Markets: The Case of Costa Rica."
   - Dr. William Newburry from Florida International University presented on the "Strategic Capabilities of Emerging Market Firms."

Session 2 Presentations:
   - Dr. Maksim Belitski from Loyola University of New Orleans talked about "Local Firms Responding to MNEs Entry Shocks in Industry and Regions."
   - Dr. Christina Theodoraki from TBS Education examined "Entrepreneurial Ecosystems through the International Lens."
   - Dr. Ricardo Monge, Director of Academia de Centroamérica, focused on "FDI, Knowledge Spillovers, and Productivity Gains in Costa Rica: The Challenges Ahead."

Keynote Presentation:

- Dr. David Audretsch from Indiana University Bloomington delivered the keynote address on "Democracy and Institutions: Foundations for International Business Success in Emerging Markets."

Afternoon Sessions:

Session 4 Presentations:
   - Mr. Ricardo Carvajal Alpírez and Msc. Vanessa Gibson spoke on "Entrepreneurship Development, Spinoffs & FDI Attraction."

Session 5:

 - Juan Pablo Jimenez concluded with a discussion on "Institutional Policies, Government Programs, and Next Generation of Incentives and Policies."

This conference provided a comprehensive exploration of the dynamics of FDI, strategic capabilities, entrepreneurial ecosystems, and the role of institutional policies in enhancing the economic landscape of emerging markets, with a particular focus on Costa Rica.
